Alaap means ‘leaders’ and this pioneering group, founded by singer Channi Singh back in 1977, are definitely leaders in the field, affectionately known to generations of music fans as the Godfathers of Bhangra. From their early days performing at small functions and in temples, they have since brought modern Bhangra to audiences around the globe.
Throughout over 30 years of performing and making music, Channi Singh has always been at the helm: Born in the Punjab, Channi was passionate about music from an early age, but it was not until 1976, when he moved to Britain and met other talented musicians, that he found his calling; to form a band which would bring the sounds of his cultural heritage to the Asian community in his new home.
Glasgow Mela, another long-running celebration of Britain’s multiculturalism, is delighted to welcome these ‘leaders’ in 2015!
